Yeasts isolated from natural environments in Rishiri & Iriomote Islands, Japan
A series of 916 yeast strains isolated from natural environments in Rishiri & Iriomote Islands, Japan, in the course of exploration of yeast species richness was deposited and stocked in JCM. The yeast strains consist of more than 150 species, almost half of which were undescribed species at the time of the research project, representing taxonomic richness of yeasts inhabiting in Japan (Takashima et al., 2012).
The yeast strain series includes high lipid producers, so called oleaginous yeasts (Tanimura et al., 2014a), some of which have unique characteristics for applications. For example, Solicoccozyma terricola (JCM 24514 and others; former name, Cryptococcus terricola) and Cystobasidium iriomotense (JCM 24594T and others) have abilities to produce lipids from soluble starch and from mixture of glucose and xylose, respectively (Tanimura et al., 2014b, 2018).
The series is a promising screening source for further applications with unique characteristics. In addition, they would be utilized for basic research in the fields of yeast taxonomic study and species diversity in nature.
