Special topic: Introduction of JCM strains possessing xenobiotic
degrading activity

Bioremediation is one of the most promising technologies, which
utilizes biological mechanisms for the decontamination of pollutants,
and hence is useful in cleaning up the polluted environment. Many
microorganisms capable of degrading xenobiotics have been isolated,
and the genes and functions concerned with this degradation ability
have been reported. Here we introduce the part of our culture
collection possessing the ability to degrade xenobiotics.
(1) Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs)
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are compounds consist of
fused aromatic rings; certain PAHs are known mutagens and
carcinogens. Strains capable of utilizing naphthalene, phenanthrene,
or more high molecular weight PAHs are available at JCM.

(2) Dioxin and related compounds
Chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin, dibenzofuran, and biphenyl, commonly
known as dioxins and PCBs, are carcinogenic, mutagenic, and
immunotoxic to animals, and possess an endocrine-disrupting activity
even in trace amounts. These compounds persist in the environment due
to their recalcitrant nature, and can accumulate biologically. JCM
has several bacterial strains that can assimilate carbon skeleton
compounds of dioxins and PCBs.

The use of agrochemicals is indispensable for efficient food
production. However, they may comprise recalcitrant chemicals that
affect the farmland ecosystem over a long period. JCM possess strains
capable of degrading gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane, atrazine,
carbendazim, or linuron.
