真菌類は高等植物や動物以外にもさまざまな生き物と相互作用を持ちます。そ
れらの相互作用の一つに緑藻類との共生が挙げられます。真菌と緑藻の相互作
用は複合生物である地衣類が有名ですが、より片利的な相互作用も知られてい
ます。
Moriyama et al. (2025) は、シラガゴケ表面の藻類マットからMonascostroma
sphagnophilum を発見し、同所的に存在する Coccomyxa sp. との相互作用を
野外サンプルの観察と共培養実験の双方により観察を行いました。その結果、
本菌は藻類コロニーが形成する厚い細胞外マトリクスを介して菌糸の侵入・定
着が起こることを初めて示し、本菌の生活史に関する長年の疑問に重要な解答
を与えました。
本研究のもう一つの意義は、野外で観察される藻類マット上の現象を純粋培養
系で再現できる実験系として提示した点にあります。真菌株と藻類株が培養リ
ソースとして利用可能であるため、細胞外マトリクスの性状や環境条件を操作
しながら、侵入・定着プロセスを定量的に検証する発展が期待されます。JCM
では京都大学の森山さんにより分離された共生菌株を公開いたしました。
