It comprises facultatively anaerobic,\r\nfermentative bacteria that have been isolated from a wide range of\r\nenvironments, including human clinical specimens, sea sand, the human\r\ngut and termite hindguts. Some members of this genus have been\r\nisolated from immunocompromised patients and are therefore regarded as\r\nopportunistic pathogens. At the same time, <i>Dysgonomonas<\/i> species and\r\nrelated bacteria have also been frequently detected in the guts of\r\ninsects such as termites and cockroaches. Because their genomes encode\r\nnumerous carbohydrate-active enzymes, they may contribute to the\r\ndegradation of plant-derived materials consumed by their host insects.\r\nIn recent years, not only cultivated isolates of <i>Dysgonomonas<\/i> from\r\ninsect guts but also 16S rRNA gene sequences of uncultured bacteria\r\nclosely related to <i>Dysgonomonas<\/i> have been increasingly reported. These\r\nfindings have drawn attention to the diversity of this bacterial group.\r\nHowever, since the genus <i>Dysgonomonas<\/i> was proposed in 2000, no\r\ncomprehensive taxonomic revision of the genus has been conducted, and\r\nthe criteria defining the genus have remained unclear.\r\nIn this study, we re-examined the taxonomy of the genus <i>Dysgonomonas<\/i>\r\nbased on both genomic information and physiological characteristics\r\n(Takahashi et al., 2026).\r\nFirst, we compared the whole genomes of previously reported\r\n<i>Dysgonomonas<\/i> species and two strains newly isolated from the gut of a\r\ntermite. Specifically, we examined how similar the shared proteins\r\nwere between bacterial genomes, using average amino acid identity,\r\nand how many proteins were shared between them, using the percentage\r\nof conserved proteins. These analyses revealed that the bacteria\r\npreviously assigned to the genus <i>Dysgonomonas<\/i> formed several groups\r\nwith high genomic similarity within each group, separated by clear\r\ngaps between groups. These groups also corresponded well to the\r\nphylogenetic relationships inferred from genome sequences.\r\nWe further compared available physiological data and found that indole\r\nproduction differed among <i>Dysgonomonas<\/i> species. This difference\r\nlargely corresponded to the groups identified by genome-based\r\ncomparisons.\r\nBased on these results, we concluded that the previously recognized\r\ngenus <i>Dysgonomonas<\/i> would be more appropriately divided into multiple\r\ngenera rather than treated as a single genus. In this study, we\r\nproposed the genus <i>Dysgonomonas<\/i> sensu stricto, including <i>Dysgonomonas\r\ngadei<\/i>; the new genus <i>Indolivaga<\/i>, represented by <i>Dysgonomonas\r\ncapnocytophagoides<\/i>; and the new genus <i>Pseudodysgonomonas<\/i>, represented\r\nby <i>Dysgonomonas massiliensis<\/i>. In addition, among the two strains newly\r\nisolated from the termite gut, one was assigned to a novel species\r\nwithin <i>Dysgonomonas<\/i> sensu stricto, whereas the other was considered to\r\nrepresent a novel species belonging to a new genus distinct from the\r\nexisting <i>Dysgonomonas<\/i> lineage. For the latter, we proposed the new\r\ngenus <i>Viscerimonas<\/i>.\r\nThis reclassification provides a taxonomic framework for organizing\r\nthe diversity of <i>Dysgonomonas<\/i>-related bacteria that are frequently\r\nfound in insect guts. It will also provide an important basis for\r\nfuture studies on the ecological roles of these bacteria in the insect\r\ngut environment.\r\nThe newly isolated microorganisms and the names proposed in this\r\ntaxonomic revision are introduced below.\r\n\r\n- <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jcm.riken.jp\/cgi-bin\/jcm\/jcm_number?JCM=35194\" target=\"_blank\">JCM 35194<\/a> <i>Dysgonomonas reticulitermitis<\/i>\r\nThis strain was isolated from the gut of the subterranean termite\r\n<i>Reticulitermes speratus<\/i>, which is widely distributed in Japan. It\r\nproduces indole. The specific epithet <i>reticulitermitis<\/i> is derived from\r\n<i>Reticulitermes<\/i>, the genus name of the termite from which the strain\r\nwas isolated. \r\n\r\n- <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jcm.riken.jp\/cgi-bin\/jcm\/jcm_number?JCM=35195\" target=\"_blank\">JCM 35195<\/a> <i>Viscerimonas tarda<\/i>\r\nThis strain was isolated from the gut of the subterranean termite\r\n<i>Reticulitermes speratus<\/i>. It does not produce indole. The genus name\r\n<i>Viscerimonas<\/i> means \"a monad inhabiting the intestines.\" The specific\r\nepithet tarda means \"slow\" or \"inactive\" in Latin and refers to\r\nthe slow growth of this strain. \r\n\r\n- <i>Indolivaga<\/i>\r\nThe genus name <i>Indolivaga<\/i> is derived from <i>indolum<\/i>, meaning indole,\r\nand <i>vagus<\/i>, meaning wandering, roaming or unfixed. The name implies\r\n\"an organism wandering away from indole,\" referring to the lack of\r\ninvolvement in indole production. This genus includes species\r\npreviously classified as <i>Dysgonomonas capnocytophagoides<\/i>,\r\n<i>Dysgonomonas macrotermitis<\/i> and <i>Dysgonomonas alginatilytica<\/i>.\r\n\r\n- <i>Pseudodysgonomonas<\/i>\r\nThe genus name <i>Pseudodysgonomonas<\/i> is derived from <i>pseudo-<\/i>, meaning\r\nfalse, and <i>Dysgonomonas<\/i>. It means \"a false <i>Dysgonomonas<\/i>,\" indicating\r\nan organism that resembles <i>Dysgonomonas<\/i> but does not belong to\r\n<i>Dysgonomonas sensu stricto<\/i>. It comprises facultatively anaerobic, fermentative bacteria that have been isolated from a wide range of environments, including human clinical specimens, sea sand, the human gut and termite hindguts. Some members of this genus have been isolated from immunocompromised patients and are therefore regarded as opportunistic pathogens. At the same time, Dysgonomonas species and related bacteria have also been frequently detected in the guts of insects such as termites and cockroaches. Because their genomes encode numerous carbohydrate-active enzymes, they may contribute to the degradation of plant-derived materials consumed by their host insects.
