It is composed of a wide variety of bacterial species, many of which are uncultured and unclassified bacterial species. Among the strains deposited in recent years, there are unique strains that require co-cultivation with other strain (helper strain). <i>Fretibacterium fastidiosum<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jcm.riken.jp\/cgi-bin\/jcm\/jcm_number?JCM=16858\">JCM 16858<sup>T<\/sup><\/a>), isolated from the oral cavity, is a bacterial species belonging to the <i>Synergistetes<\/i> phylum. This strain requires <i>Fusobacterium nucleatum<\/i> subsp. <i>nucleatum<\/i> as a helper strain. <i>Tannerella serpentiformis<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jcm.riken.jp\/cgi-bin\/jcm\/jcm_number?JCM=31301\">JCM 31301<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jcm.riken.jp\/cgi-bin\/jcm\/jcm_number?JCM=31302\">JCM 31302<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jcm.riken.jp\/cgi-bin\/jcm\/jcm_number?JCM=31303\">JCM 31303<sup>T<\/sup><\/a>) is associated with human oral health. These strains require <i>Cutibacterium<\/i> acnes (formerly <i>Propionibacterium acnes<\/i> subsp. <i>acnes<\/i>) as a helper strain. Two strains of Unidentified bacterium <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jcm.riken.jp\/cgi-bin\/jcm\/jcm_number?JCM=31632\">JCM 31632<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jcm.riken.jp\/cgi-bin\/jcm\/jcm_number?JCM=31633\">JCM 31633<\/a> have also been deposited as the first cultivated strain of phylotype <i>Anaerolineae<\/i> bacterium HOT-439 belonging to the oral cavity-derived <i>Chloroflexi<\/i> phylum. These strains require <i>Fusobacterium nucleatum<\/i> subsp. <i>polymorphum<\/i> as a helper strain. It is expected that the symbiotic mechanism of microbiota will be unraveled by further isolating and culturing strains requiring co-culture in the future.
